Mafia Island has had a prominent place in the history of the East Coast of Africa, as it was a safe haven for ships to stop for water and for repairs; Mafia was part of the sultanate of Kilwa during the 13 th Century and prospered as a settlement during Kilwa’s rise as an economic power. The island has been visited by seafarers from the Gulf for two millenia and has seen Egyptian, Omani, Greco- Roman, Chinese, Portuguese and Turkish traders as well as French and American buccaneers and slavers in the 1800s. More recently English and German occupations have left their impressions.

Mafia Island lies approximately 25 kilometers off the Tanzanian coast, 130 kilometers from Dar es Salaam which takes approximately 35 minutes by air. The mainland is covered with large forests of palm trees, baobabs, and mangroves (as many as 7 species). Among the fauna there are small antelopes; over 130 species of birds among which also a rare species of bat present only on the island of Mafia and in the Comoros Islands; different species of primates, among which the curious galacids, small nocturnal primates also known as “Bush babies” or “children of the forest” because of their unique verses, similar to human stirrings. The waters of the Marine Park of Mafia host colorful coral reefs (about 48 species), immense submarine meadows, over 400 species of fish, dolphins, sea turtles and the dugong, a mammal similar to the seal that, after 20 years of absence in these areas, seemed to have become extinct.

Chole Island is situated just 5 minutes East of Mafia Island by boat and is one of the most historical islands of the archipelago. This tour is one of our most popular as in a short amount of time one can experience a good dose of Chole's nature, culture and history. The tour can be broken up into 4 sections. Ruins: Chole boasts Arabic ruins from the 12th and German ruins from 19th Century, which were built during world war I. The ruins have surrended to mother nature and are almost all smothered with green foliage and brown vines. Bats: Chole also boasts the worlds first dedicated fruit bat sanctuary. During they day these creatures hang in the trees asleep and fly over to Mafia by night to feed. The Boatyard: Chole island is home to the skilled men who build the traditional Swahili dhows by hand and with minimal tools. The Red herring: The Red Herring is Chole's beautiful bar, which is also the only Western facing bar on the Eastern side of the Island, allowing for truly magical sunsets and of course lovely cold beverages to go down with it. Dinner and stay overnight, Mafia Island Lodge.

The tour starts with a pick up early in the morning by Car or Bajaj which takes you over to the Western side of the Island where you will be invited on board (Dhow) and head out to start spotting sharks! Tea and coffee as well as some small snacks are served on board in between whale shark sightings. In Mafia between the months of October and March one can indulge in a truly magical experience: swimming with Whale Sharks. Whale sharks are not whales and are not your typical sharks, they're the largest fish in the sea measuring up to 20m. The whale shark is a filter feeder and therefore has no teeth, they are completely harmless. The majority of the time they're very shy although on occasion can be inquisitive making your encounter that much more spectacular. Clients usually return around 11:30 however this really depends on how long it takes to spot the whale sharks and how long you want to be out swimming with them! After the tour we drive back to the hotel for lunch and leisure. Dinner and stay overnight, Mafia Island Lodge

This is your day to relax on the island although you are free to book any other excursion.

After breakfast or lunch depending your flight time we will drive to Mafia Airport to catch our flight to Dar es salaam, Zanzibar or Arusha. End of the tour.
